Tricorne Audio Outfits New Church Sanctuary with Allen & Heath ML4000

Fargo, ND (July 19, 2005) -- Sound system design and install company Tricorne Audio, Inc. of Fargo, ND has installed a 48-input, 23-buss Allen & Heath ML4000 dual function VCA mixing console at Covenant Evangelical Church in Alexandria, MN. The desk is the centerpiece of a complete sound system installation in a brand new sanctuary built to accommodate a growing congregation at the church, which is located midway between Fargo and Minneapolis.

According to Dallas Anderson of Allen & Heath dealer Tricorne Audio, when it came to choosing the console, the superior sound quality and the right physical dimensions of the ML4000 made it the ideal choice for the new sanctuary, which accommodates over 600 people, more than three times the capacity of the previous building. "It was features for the fit and bang for the dollar," says Anderson. "There wasn't anything on the market like it."

Topping the list of features provided by the ML4000, says Anderson, was the LCRplus panning. Allen & Heath's LCRplus feature extends conventional LCR panning schemes through the addition of a blend control for level and positioning of the center signal. Due to the sanctuary's fan-shaped seating layout and platform thrust, a pseudo-LCR setup of two clusters of three speakers each has been installed, with each of the four outside speakers covering the four segments of seating. At this installation, says Anderson, "If you pan everything to the center output, it feeds the two outside speakers in both clusters, so every seat has a mono source." Stereo imaging is created via the third speaker in each cluster.

With the majority of the Allen & Heath console's 12 auxiliary sends in use -- eight for the contemporary worship band's monitor system, two for digital reverbs, and one for a dedicated subwoofer feed -- the console's 11 x 4 matrix and eight audio subgroups are also critical. "They're going to use the matrix for a lot of different things," he comments, noting that Tricorne installed an XLR patchbay with the console. "They can take subgroup outputs or a matrix out and patch them to a small broadcast mixer, so they can differentiate between vocals and keyboards and instrumentation in the broadcast mix. So it's more than just a PA mix to the broadcast, which never sounds right."

He continues, "They're also planning on putting in a computer-based recording system. They may also use the matrix for feeds to local camcorders. Currently, it's going to a Hi-8 camera and a CD recorder, just for in-house use. It also feeds overflow areas. There's a narthex, and they have a Family Life Center, which is like a gymnasium." Other areas include a fireside room, a nursery, and an awana center, which is a youth area.

The Family Life Center already incorporated an Allen & Heath MixWizard, which predisposed church leaders toward the new ML4000. "There's a MixWizard 16:2 that runs 12 mics, a cassette and CD player, and two monitor sends," Anderson reports. "They are comfortable with that, as it's held up well. And Allen & Heath's support is very good, if we have any issues down the road."
